The Birthwise Faculty
Birthwise Midwifery School utilizes a diverse faculty of working professionals who bring years of midwifery experience to our academic program.
Sarah Ackerly, ND, CPM
Sarah is a Naturopathic Physician and CPM with a busy family practice and home birth practice. She graduated from National College of Naturopathic Medicine and was a faculty member at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR. She practices in Topsham, ME and has been on the Birthwise faculty since 1995.
Holly Murphy, CPM
Holly received a BA in Religion and Philosophy from Saint Mary’s College (1999) and graduated from Birthwise in 2005. She maintains a private practice, Birch Moon Midwifery, on the Blue Hill Peninsula. Holly is an active member of several midwifery organizations, including NACPM, MACPM, and MANA.
Ellie Daniels, CPM
Ellie Daniels, CPM, is an apprentice-trained community midwife. She founded Morningstar Midwifery in 1983. She also owns The Green Store, “a general store for the 21st century”. Ellie has been on the faculty at Birthwise Midwifery School since its early days. Through her practice, her teaching, and her national midwifery work, she weaves together her passions for midwifery and business.
Susi Delaney, MA, CPM
Susi is a graduate of Birthwise. She runs a small homebirth practice – Red Tent Midwifery – based in Gray, ME. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Rochester and a master’s degree in History & Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania. She is on the Board of the Association of Midwifery Educators. She is the Clinical Manager at Birthwise.
Heidi Fillmore, CPM, NHCM
Heidi is the founder & current Executive and Academic Director of Birthwise. She has a Bachelors degree in Architectural Technology from Southern Illinois University (1982) and graduated from the Midwifery Training Institute in Albuquerque, NM in 1987. She has been practicing midwifery in Maine and New Hampshire for 25 years and has been a faculty member since the founding of Birthwise in 1994. She is currently a member of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council Board of Directors.
Robin Illian, CPM
Robin is a homebirth midwife with a practice in Portland, ME. She has a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Biology from James Madison University (1999) and is an alumni of Birthwise. Robin attended births and was part of the midwifery community in California and Colorado, before moving to Maine.
Jacqueline Lamberto, CPM
Jackie is one of the midwives at The Birth House here at Birthwise. She has a Master’s degree in Public Health from Boston University and is a graduate of Birthwise Midwifery School. Besides her teaching responsibilities, she also works as the Clinical Director at Birthwise. She comes to us most recently from California.
Morgan Titus, ND
Dr. Morgan Titus Rau has a naturopathic medical clinic in central Maine. Her focus as a naturopathic doctor and home-birth midwife is on women’s wellness and pediatrics. At Maine Family Natural Health she specializes in diagnosis and individualized treatment of men, women, and children with acute and chronic diseases. Dr. Titus Rau completed a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology and Women’s Studies at the University of Maine in 2001. She is a 2005 doctorate graduate of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. She completed her midwifery coursework at NCNM, and her births with Certified Professional Midwives in Oregon and Maine. Dr. Titus Rau is Secretary of the Maine Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
Dolores Carbonneau, CNM, CPM
Dolores is a graduate of Seattle Midwifery School (19….) and had a home birth practice in coastal Maine before returning to school to become a CNM. She currently works as a hospital-based CNM.
Beth Bongiolatti, CPM, NHCM
Beth is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and New Hampshire Certified Midwife (NHCM) joining the Birth House clinic from the Birth Cottage of Milford in Southern New Hampshire.
She began her study of midwifery during graduate school at the SIT Graduate Institute (formerly the School for International Training/SIT) while completing her Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development. She completed her dissertation on a working theory of “Developmental Midwifery,” examining the role of birth in communities experiencing civil war and conflict.
Her clinical midwifery training was initiated during the practicum portion of her graduate studies, working with the Yayasan Bumi Sehat midwifery clinic in Bali, Indonesia. She worked for eight months at the clinic, examining the intersection of midwifery, community development, and global health. Under the tutelage midwives from Bali, Australia, Europe, and Canada, she lived and worked in the community surrounding the clinic attending births.
