The Birthwise Faculty
Birthwise Midwifery School utilizes a diverse faculty of working professionals who bring years of midwifery experience to our academic program.
Sarah Ackerly, ND, CPM
Sarah is a Naturopathic Doctor and CPM with a busy family practice and home birth practice. She graduated from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR in 1993 where she also served on the faculty there from 1993-1995. She currently practices in Topsham, ME and has been on the Birthwise faculty since 1996.
Currently Teaching: Physical Assessment, Homeopathy
Beth Bongilatti, MA, CPM, NHCM
Beth became a supervising midwife at the Birthwise Community Clinic, in November of 2014. She is a 2013 graduate of Birthwise, and began her work as a midwife at the Birth Cottage of Milford in Southern New Hampshire in early 2013. She began her training as a midwife at Yayasan Bumi Sehat midwifery clinic in Bali, Indonesia, while completing the practicum portion of her Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, VT (2010). She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/Global Politics & English from University of New England in Biddeford, ME in 2005.
Currently Teaching: Post Partum, Normal Labor and Birth, Water Birth, Art of Traditional Midwifery
Delores received her midwifery education from The Seattle Midwifery School in Seattle, WA (1993). Once a CPM with a home birth practice, Dolores returned to the University of Southern Maine to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (2006) and then onto the Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing to complete her Master’s of Science in Nursing in 2010. She currently works at Maine General Hospital in Augusta, ME as a CNM.

Gretchen Davidson, MSW
Gretchen has a BA in Sociology and minor in Women’s Studies. When she is not teaching here at Birthwise, she offers counseling services to Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Susi Delaney, MA, CPM
Susi is a graduate of Birthwise (2007). She opened Red Tent Midwifery, a private home birth practice based in New Gloucester, Maine, in 2007. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Rochester (1995) and a master’s degree in History & Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania (1997).
Currently Teaching: Professional Issues: Research Methods, Skills Practice 3, 4, and 5, Independent Research Projects
Jacqueline Dubord, MPH, CPM, NHCM Jacqueline is a practicing homebirth midwife. Jacqueline has a Master’s in Public Health specializing in maternal and child health from Boston University School of Public vlic Health specializing in maternal and child health from Boston University School of Public Health (2008). She received a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of California at Davis (2005). She is also an alumnus of Birthwise.
Currently Teaching: Skills Practice 1 and 2, Public Health Issues for Midwives
Heidi Fillmore, CPM, NHCM Heidi is the founder & current Executive Director of Birthwise. She has a Bachelors degree in Architectural Technology from Southern Illinois University (1982) and graduated from the Midwifery Training Institute in 1987. She has been practicing midwifery in Maine and New Hampshire for 24 years and has been a faculty member since the founding of Birthwise in 1994. She is currently a member of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council Board of Directors.

Robin Illian, CPM
Robin is a homebirth midwife who is a partner in the Sacopee Valley Midwives. She has a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Biology from James Madison University (1999) and is an alumnus of Birthwise (. Robin has attended births and been part of the midwifery community in California and Colorado.
Currently Teaching: Complications of Labor and Birth
Abby received a B.A. in English and Religious Studies from the University of Alabama in 2006. She went on a received her M.A. in English from the University of Alabama in 2010. She taught 3 courses at the University of Alabama as a primary instructor between 2008 and 2010.
Currently Teaching: Professional Midwifery I and II, Labwork, Childbirth Preparation Methods, and Writing Workshop.
Holly received a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Saint Mary’s College (1999). She lived and worked with people with disabilities in a volunteer community in Washington State for three years before moving to Maine. Holly graduated from Birthwise (2005), and as part of her training spent a month working in a birth center in the Philippines. In 2005 she opened Birch Moon Midwifery, a private home birth practice in Bath, Maine. She has been a faculty member at Birthwise since 2005.

Lindsay Piper, NP
Lindsay is a women’s health Nurse Practitioner at Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center in Bangor, ME. She has a Bachelors degree in Women’s Studies and Sociology from the University of New Hampshire (2002). She has a Masters of Science in Nursing in Adult and Women’s Health from MGH Institute of Health Professionals (2009).
Currently Teaching: Well Body Care, Intrauterine
Tiffany is a CPM with a home birth practice in Yarmouth Maine and provides the following services: Prenatal care, Lactation Counseling, Well Woman Care, Routine GYN Services, Pre-Conception Counseling, and Nutrition. She received her Bachelors of Art in Sociology from Bates College, Maine (2004). She graduated from Birthwise in 2013.
Currently Teaching: Normal Prenatal, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, Green Birth and Parenting
Morgan Titus, ND
Morgan is a Naturopathic Doctor practicing in the Augusta area. She is currently finishing her midwifery training. She received her Naturopathic Doctorate from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR (2005) and her Bachelor of Arts in Zoology, special concentration in Women’s Studies from the University of Maine (2001).
