Community-based Program Overview | Print |

The Community-based Program consists of ten 2-week intensive academic sessions alternated with longer periods of clinical work with a midwife of the student’s choosing. This allows students to remain in their home regions for the majority of their training.  The Community-based program starts in June every other year.  Our next cohort will begin in June of 2010 and takes approximately 3 years to complete.

This program could be a good option for:

 * Women who are not able to relocate due to family or other responsibilities, but could come for shorter, more intense academic sessions.
 * Apprentices already working with a mentor midwife that would like to augment their theoretical learning in a classroom setting and receive a graduation certificate from a MEAC accredited program.
 * Aspiring midwives who want an concentrated academic program.

The Community-based Midwifery Program differs from our other program in the following ways:

     * Less time is spent at our facility in Bridgton, Maine.
     * Classes are held five days per week during all academic sessions.
 * Academic sessions are two weeks long and convene every other month to make it easier for students coming from long distances.
* Students who enroll in this program must have an apprenticeship site prearranged before coming to Birthwise in June. The midwife you choose must be licensed by the state, nationally certified, or have been practicing midwifery for a minimum of 3 years. If you need assistance finding a midwife to work with, Birthwise may give limited help in locating possible preceptors, although all arrangements will be negotiated between the preceptor and the student. Preceptors working with students in this program receive a stipend from Birthwise reflecting the amount of experience the student receives while in her practice.

In order to help broaden our student’s clinical experience, we encourage students to do a short rotation with a caregiver who provides well woman care, a breastfeeding consultant, and a childbirth educator.  Students can work with more than one midwife during their apprenticeship and may travel overseas to a high volume birth site as part of her training.
